Scamper Torrent w as well built and despite having had zero maintenance was still in good shape in 2001 when a DOC volunteer party went in and repainted it and installed the water tank. A small roof-fed water tank was installed in 2001. The piles were untreated silver pine and are still pretty sound after 50 years. Its frame was treated pine and it was lined unlike many earlier S81s. Scamper Torrent was the last of the NZFS S81 four-bunk huts built in 1971 at a cost of around $1600. Looking over to Terra Quinn from Karnbach. Allow 2.5-3 hours for the journey from Kiwi Flat Hut to Scamper Torrent Hut, or 6-8 hours from the Waitaha roadend. It is a 10 minute walk from here upriver to the Hut which is located on a low wedge of terrace on the TL. Waratahs lead from here down towards the basin and a short section of track that drops through a band of alpine scrub to the creek bed. A steep narrow spur is followed from here with the gradient relenting very little until Point 1125m is reached. It climbs steeply out of the creek, then follows a sloping bush terrace towards the toe of the hill. The track starts 75m up the TR of Labyrinth Creek at the bottom of Kiwi Flat. DOC were planning to do some bridge work in the Waitaha in 2022 and possibly tag on some work on the track. The rest is starting to get a bit overgrown here and there, but is still OK to follow. In 2021 some Kaimahi for Nature funding was allocated for maintenance, however this never ended up happening. A bit of work was done on the bottom terrace by some Permolat folk in October 2021. The access track up to Scamper Torrent basin from Kiwi Flat Hut has been reliant on volunteer input since the mid 1990's. Scamper Torrent received 10 visits in both 2019 and 20. The Hut has historically been low-use, with the frequency of visits increasing somewhat following exposure in wilderness articles and on this website.

Scamper Torrent tumbles from the basin in a series of waterfalls down into Whirling Water, one of the Waitaha's larger tributaries. It's a picturesque and remote setting that can be accessed in a day from the Waitaha roadend by a reasonably fit party. Scamper Torrent Hut is located in the Waitaha valley in the upper basin of Scamper Torrent. Maintenance of the access track was officially dropped from DOC's maintenance schedule in 2013 but by then Permolat and others had already been keeping it open for some time. Input in the interim was mostly carried out by volunteers. Scamper Torrent was designated as fully maintain by DOC in their 2004 Review, however nothing of significance was done in the way of repairs until 2021 when funding became available for some major maintenance and the installation of a much needed toilet.
